Take Action: Urge Prison to Deliver GiGi’s Hormones

Take Action: Urge Prison to Deliver GiGi’s Hormones

Feb 26, 2018 | Posted by Claire S. Gould |

February 27th marks one year since GiGi Thomas, a DC-based Black trans human rights advocate, was put on trial for taking the actions she needed to survive. Since the conviction, GiGi has been denied access to hormones and told that she needed a new prescription from an endocrinologist before she could be given these necessary medications. GiGi received the prescription in January 2018 but still has not received the medication.

GiGi needs our support! Call the Warden Richard Dovey at (240) 420-1601 and demand that GiGi receive her medication.

GiGi is not the only one being deprived access to medication at the Maryland Correctional Training Center. Maryland prisoners are not getting appropriate medical services. Take five minutes to call MD State Senator Joan Carter Conway at (410) 841-3145, and ask her to address the poor provision of healthcare services in Maryland prisons!

Script for the Warden:

Hi my name is [NAME] and I’m calling out of concern for Gigi Thomas and all prisoners at Hagerstown. I understand that HIPAA prevents your discussing Gigi’s healthcare with me, but it’s come to my attention that after months of waiting Gigi has yet to receive vital medications. This is even after providing all necessary paperwork and attending all necessary appointments. Please pass on my message to Warden Dovey that all people, including trans people at Maryland Correctional Training Center, deserve adequate healthcare. We need him to take action now to make sure Gigi gets her prescribed medications without further delay. Thank you and have a nice day.

Script for the Senator:

Hi my name is [NAME] and I’m calling out of concern for Gigi Thomas and other prisoners in Maryland correctional facilities. It’s come to my attention that after months of waiting, Gigi has yet to receive vital medications even after providing all necessary paperwork and attending all necessary appointments. Please pass on my message to Senator Conway that as the chair of the Senate Committee on Educational, Health and Environmental Affairs we need her to take action to investigate the healthcare afforded to all prisoners, including trans people, at the Maryland Correctional Training Facility and other Maryland correctional facilities. I also ask her to ensure that Gigi gets her prescribed medications without further delay. Thank you and have a nice day.
