“They shouted insults at me.”

Location: 14th and N St. NW DC
Time: Morning Rush Hour (5am-9:30am)

I was walking to the gym in spandex and a tank top (not that it should matter) and heard a honk from behind me; I turned around and saw it was three guys in a trash truck honking at me. Iflicked (sic) them off (mature, I know) and then they slowed the truck down, holding up traffic on busy 14th, to crawl at my pace for a block and a half while they shouted insults at me. Not fun.

“What did I drop?”

This isn’t close to the most offensive thing I’ve heard in the street in this neighborhood, but I was still plenty pissed. I was walking home from a friend’s (a note: I was wearing a lumpy brown sweater covering a shirt in which I was storing my wallet and such in the pockets- I actually looked like a sack of potatoes) and a guy in the passenger side of a delivery truck outside the liquor store yelled, “excuse me miss!” I turned around, and he said, “you dropped something.” I had three items in my pockets, which I checked to make sure were still there. They were. “What did I drop?” I yelled from a distance of about ten feet. He pointed on the ground right next to the door of the truck.

“It’s right here.”
“Where?”
“Right here.”
“What does it look like?”
“It’s right where I’m pointing.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t see anything.”
It was a short curb, and I could see perfectly well there was nothing where he was pointing. I was not raised in a barn- I’ve seen that trick before, and I have no intention of falling for it. I’m definitely not going to get any closer to YOU, buddy. I kept the distance between us and stared at him in the face for about fifteen seconds, not saying anything. He said, “I’m sorry, I thought you dropped something.” I held my look for about ten more seconds, said “okay,” and walked away. I don’t think there was anything more I could have done, as I didn’t want a screaming match with a truck driver on my corner, but, still- come one.

The worst part? The driver of the truck was clearly embarrassed at the passenger’s behavior, but instead of saying anything to his friend, or apologizing to me, he just held his head in his hand and looked out the window.

Yuck! Harassers in a truck!

I was walking back to work, enjoying the weather, enjoying the freebies I got from Georgetown Cupcake and from a girl on the street handing out free Ghirardelli chocolates, and these fools had to ruin it!

Out of nowhere, I hear “Yo, gorgeous!” and I turn in the direction where it came from. I see these two losers in a red and yellow truck smirking at me. Gross.

The truck pulls up further in traffic, and I catch up to it and snap a photo with my phone. I wish it’d came out clearer so you could see their faces, but at least the company name is somewhat visible.

When I told them that they needed to do their jobs and not hit on women, they didn’t care. They continued to smirk and giggle. Passers-by made a comment about me and giggled, and I don’t know if they were laughing at me getting harassed or laughing at me giving the harassers an earful, but I just didn’t care. I felt like these harassers just ruined what was a good afternoon.

The license plate on this truck was a Maryland plate, 11K 394. I saw that it said “Joy” on the side of the truck and got part of the truck’s phone number, 800-992-, but I couldn’t catch the last four digits. Google searches yielded nothing close.

I hope the employer sees this photo of this truck online, and reprimands these punks for hitting on women while they’re on the clock. It’s so disgusting.
