Public Masturbation in H Street NE DC: “As I passed him, he starting hissing at me to get my attention.”

Case of public masturbation on H Street, DC
Case of public masturbation on H Street, DC

Location: 8th St between I and H, NE (H Street)
Time:  Morning Rush Hour (5am-9:30am)

I was walking down 8th St this morning on my way to the bus stop on H and 8th. There was a man–white polo, jeans, dark baseball hat–on a bike in the middle of the side walk. He looked a little out of it, but not particularly threatening. As I passed him he starting hissing at me to get my attention. I looked over at him, still not aware of what was going on. He had his penis out and was masturbating.

I started yelling at him: told him I was disgusted, asked him if he had a mother or a sister, etc. He actually seemed shocked that I had gotten angry. He just sat there for a minute and didn’t move while I yelled at him. He only pedaled away when I started yelling about getting the police. I reported him to the MPDC, but I am not sure how much they can really do.

“I took a route that was twice as long” to avoid sexual harassment

Location: Safeway at H & 14th Street NE
Time: Daytime (9:30am-3:30pm)

I walked from my apartment to the Safeway a few blocks away. I was new to DC, had only lived there a few weeks at the time. I walked past a group of men who made comments and gestures towards me. I was very aware of them and crossed to the other side of the street at my first chance. One of them followed me into Safeway and asked me what he could do to get a girl like me. I told him I was just trying to buy some things and didn’t know. He followed me up and down several aisles. I finally called my boyfriend so it would be clear that I was on the phone and someone would hear me yell if he tried anything. I left the store without buying what I needed and walked home. Took a route that was twice as long but didn’t force me to walk past the group of men again. I don’t live in DC anymore.

Followed and Harassed

Walking down H street with my female partner trying to catch the X2 bus. We were walking side by side, not holding hands. Man with group with a group of friends yelled, “Hey girls!” repeatedly as we approached – probably five or six times, we veered away from him and he even moved towards us. He continued to yell as we passed him. I turned around, made eye contact as I flipped him off. He followed for a half block and continued to yell at us. He eventually got bored and stopped. Street harassment makes me feel unsafe when I leave my house and it greatly angers me. I *never* consider this type of attention welcome or a compliment.

More Than Flyers

Today I was walking along H street to Starbucks when I notice a man saying things while handing out some flyers. As I get walk further along and get closer to him, I hear him yelling after a woman who was heading inside a building, “Fine lady, walk away from me. This flyer would nicely compliment your outfit though.” He says something along the same lines to me and several other women who passed by simply ignoring him. I also passed another man on the same street (that was not giving out any flyers) who remarked, “Hey pretty thing.” I think he put his hand out too, but I tried not to pay any attention to him so I sped up and went into Starbucks.
