“No!”

I was out running and waiting at the intersection at 14th and Florida and two men were walking up to the intersection. My instincts told me right away that I was about to be harassed so I subtly changed my body’s stance as the two men approached me. They slowed down, split up, with one man walking on either side of me, each of them saying “Hey baby!” or “Come with me” and other, much more lewd things in Spanish – one of which was actually quite comical. I quickly said, “NO!”, looked one of them in the eyes and ran away.

Really Inappropriate

I was walking home from work on June 1 when I passed a man next to me on the sidewalk walking toward me. He made eye contact and smiled. I’m generally a friendly person and had had a really good day at work, so I smiled back. As he passed me, he reached around and slapped me on the ass with his hand. It was almost hard enough to hurt, and I heard the impact even with my headphones in.

I literally stopped right there. At first, I thought maybe it was an accident and I had somehow bumped into him. But I turned around and he was walking away from me, with his head turned looking at me. He was grinning. I looked away and said “What the hell?” to myself, trying to decide what to do.

At that point, another young woman who had seen what happened walked up to me and said, “He’s been doing that to every woman he passes on the street for the last couple blocks.” That woke me from my haze and proved that I didn’t image what happened. I turned around and yelled at him, “Hey, man, that is so not cool. What you did was really inappropriate.” He grinned and shrugged his shoulders. I wish I had come up with something a little meaner.

At that point I took out my phone to call the police, but he turned and jogged across the intersection. So I just left.

I’ve been street harassed before, but never actually touched like this. It really freaked me out. I’ve even changed my route home from work. I told my boyfriend the story, and he was really upset about it too.

I’m not sure if descriptions are allowed on this site, but this man was about 6 feet tall, African-American, and in his 40s. He was wearing jeans, a white t-shirt, and a grey hoodie. (Note from HBDC!: We allow descriptions in cases like this.)

If any other women have a similar experience, you’re not imagining things! This guys is apparently spanking a lot of women.

“I got condoms, baby…”

I was standing next to my bike texting when two guys walking by said “How’s it goin,” to which I replied the same… The first guy then asked if he could “ride on that bike” with me and when I said “no” without looking up at them, the second continued with, “I got condoms, baby, all I need is one night with you!” I ignored them and they kept walking. Fabulous.

“I’m gonna walk you home.”

I was walking home from the Columbia Heights metro on 3/10/10 around 9:30 p.m. and I noticed a middle aged man walking really closely behind me. After about a block, he says, “Hey, girl.” I ignore him and walk faster, he catches up to me, “I’m gonna walk you home.”

At this point there are other people around so I stop and say, quite loudly, “No, you’re not. I don’t know you. Leave me alone.” He keeps talking to me, saying he’s a nice man, he’s not a bad guy. I say again, “Leave me alone. I’m not going anywhere until you walk away.” At this point, he says, “Is it because I’m African American? If it is, that’s too bad, because I am one of the nicest, most caring African American gentleman.” I say I’m sure that’s the case, but I don’t know him and I don’t make friends out of strangers at night when I’m walking home alone. He asks if he was too aggressive. I say again, I’m not going anywhere until he leaves, I’m not messing with a stranger at night. He finally says, “Alright, alright, that’s too bad, but I understand” and walks off.

Half a block away, an older man on a second story porch says, “Crazy guy, eh? I was watching! I would have been there.” Um, thanks, I guess?
