CASS Stands with Mayor Bowser Against Harassment at Two Rivers

CASS Stands with Mayor Bowser Against Harassment at Two Rivers

Dec 9, 2015 | Posted by CASS Staff |

Mayor Bowser is stepping up in support of Two Rivers Public Charter School’s lawsuit against anti-choice protesters who have been harassing students and staff at the school in Northeast Washington. A Planned Parenthood center is going to be built next door to the school, and anti-choice protesters have been telling students that “murderers” are moving in next door and showing graphic images to children. We stand with Planned Parenthood to increase reproductive health services in DC, and we stand with Two Rivers against harassment.

CASS supports the lawsuit and issued the statement below:

Collective Action for Safe Spaces (CASS) stands with Two Rivers Public Charter School and Mayor Muriel Bowser in support of safe public spaces in our community – and particularly safe schools. We strongly believe that the harassment of K-8th grade students and staff at Two Rivers Public Charter School by anti-choice protesters is reprehensible and unacceptable. Harassment frequently escalates to more severe forms of violence, and it has long-term public health impacts, including anxiety and depression. We need to demonstrate that harassment will not be tolerated in our communities.

Here at CASS, we believe that students and staff should feel safe occupying public spaces, and we support the Mayor’s Office in taking action against harassment.

In solidarity,
Jessica Raven
Interim Executive Director
