Yesterday, we visited American University to speak about street harassment to a class of 15 students enrolled in AU’s peer sexual assault training program, called Peer Educators for the Elimination of Relationship and Sexual Violence (PEERS).
The mission of PEERS, a new program, is to increase awareness of sexual assault, dating abuse, and stalking as well as reduce the incidence of sexual violence in the AU community through outreach and education. We spoke to the students about how street harassment falls on the continuum of sexual violence, the effects of harassment (especially for survivors of sexual violence), bystander intervention methods, responses to street harassment and ways to support friends and others who experience harassment.
We were so *inspired* by these amazing students, who are taking a stand against rape culture in their work to support survivors and prevent sexual violence. Go, AU!
