“I love you.”
I was waiting for the H bus on the corner of Irving & Mt Pleasant Street in the Mt Pleasant neighborhood, when a man approached me and asked if I spoke Spanish. After I said no he switched to English, asking me if I would date him and whether or not I was married. My hands were in my coat pockets so I said I was married and couldn’t date him (a lie) and wouldn’t date him (a truth), and he asked to see my wedding ring. “My hands are cold.” He didn’t quite believe me but said he had to go, and upon parting tried to hug me while saying, “I love you.” I put my right hand firmly on his chest and said, “No” in a firm voice, keeping him at arm’s length.
After that he quickly disappeared.
