“Hey baby”

I was walking back to work from Union Station when I pass a guy wearing huge headphones. He goes “Hey baby, how’d you get that cute ass? How’d your ass get so cute?” bursting my happy little bubble of just talking on the phone with an old friend while having a good coffee. I say back “please don’t harass people you don’t know.” He gets a block past me, yells “shut the fuck up!” and goes on his merry way. I wish people I didn’t know would not invade my personal space (whether it be physical OR my mental personal space) and then get mad when I don’t love the attention.

Seriously, it gets on my nerves. And kind of scares me because he got so angry so close to my stomping grounds.

One of the most frustrating things to me is how angry and mean harassers get when you express your displeasure in being harassed, or even when you just pointedly ignore them. It makes me wonder, what do they expect? Do they really think you’re going to like being harassed and thank them? Or do they think of women so much as objects, rather than people with feelings, that they get upset when they’re proved wrong?

You hit the nail on the head. If these men really respected us women and treated us as human beings with feelings and emotions, then maybe they’d understand how wrong what they’re doing is. But to them we’re only “T&A,” so how dare “T&A” speak up and fight back?! It’s a frustrating situation.

Last year or so, I got harassed by a construction worker while he was on the job, and when I told him he had no right to talk to me like that, his response was “I’m a grown-ass man—I can say what I want!” Well he wasn’t so “grown-ass” when I reported him to his company!

Men like these think so little of women.
